About Missy Loewe

Missy Loewe has more than a decade of expertise in the art business field. She is the president of Visual Arts Consulting, a firm dedicated to serving the business needs of artists with business and marketing advice and services. She is also academic dean and lead business instructor at Washington School of Photography, and a co-founder and board president of the non-profit Capitol Arts Network, where she has jurored dozens of shows through the years. As co-founder of the website ArtPerk.com, she designed a free and easily searchable database of art opportunities.

Missy holds a master’s degree in management and a law degree with emphasis on intellectual property, business issues, and nonprofit law – giving her unique insight into how the most creative artists can fall victim to bad business practices, or profit from good ones.

Starting as a photography studio owner and modeling agency co-president, Missy has seen first hand how photographers, models, and business mesh, what mistakes and errors artists and models can make, and what business practices can make them successful.

She serves on the board of nonprofit companies including Capitol Arts Network, Memento Mori Society (historic preservation), G-PAW (animal rescue), and the advisory board and legal committee for FotoWeekDC .

Books she has published include “Doing the Right Thing: Models Rights and Responsibilities”, “Historic Gravestone Art of Charleston, South Carolina, 1695-1802”, “Beyond the Bake Sale: 100 Innovative Fundraising Ideas for Nonprofits,” “Virtual Pose 4,” “Virtual Pose Duo,” “Virtual Pose Children & Teens,” “Virtual Pose 3: The Ultimate Visual Reference Series for Drawing the Human Figure,” “Virtual Pose 2: The Ultimate Visual Reference Series for Drawing the Human Figure,” and “Remembering Georgetown,” to be published in late 2009.

Missy grew up in Spokane, Washington, and has lived for nearly 25 years in the Washington, D.C., area. She resides in the Washington suburb of Gaithersburg, Maryland, with her husband, three cats and a border collie named Redford.
